As you read in an earlier post, one of the most important things to do to get your website higher search result rankings is to continually add new content to it.  However, this can be somewhat difficult with a business website, especially one that sells products.  If you’re not adding new products to your inventory, then you don’t really have much to add to your site.  However, there is one way to ensure that you always have fresh content: add a blog to your site.

Now, you might wonder just how you can work a blog into a site that does nothing but sell items or services.  Well, there are several ways.  One way is to start a blog about running your business.  People are interested in learning what it takes to set up an online business, how to manage inventory, and what challenges one will face.  You can blog about a particular process (how an item is tested, for example, or how an idea goes from concept to reality), about each of your products, or about your thoughts on running a business.

You can also start a blog about the industry you’re in.  You can blog about things unique to your type of business, unique to online businesses, ideas on creating a website, or industry news.  As someone who is in web development, SEO, and online business, your thoughts are of interest to those who are looking to break into these industries.

Besides getting your ideas out there, associating a blog with your business website is going to help you in other ways.  As stated above, it’s a great way to always include fresh content.  It’s also a good way of working SEO keywords into your site.  Plus, you can get more visitors to your site by linking to other, related websites and by inviting readers to comment on your blogs.  All of this helps get your site more visitors and gets your site ranked higher in search engine results

Search engine ranking is one of the most important things for all online businesses.  If your site isn’t in the top ten search results, chances are very few people will visit it.  Most people find what they want in those first ten sites, and many search engines only list ten websites at a time.  Because of this, everyone wants their website to have great SEO articles and text.  However, there’s one thing many website owners don’t realise: having their website search engine optimised once is not good enough!

That’s right—you can have professional SEO writers come in and give your site a total make over, but in a year, maybe sooner, you’re going to need to have them come back and revamp your site again.  There are several reasons for this.  First of all, search engine robots are constantly evolving and changing the rules.  At the moment, for example, these robots pick up on keywords found in the titles and the alternative text for your images.  But there’s no guarantee that keywords in these two sections will always count towards categorising your website.  If too many sites start cramming their titles full of keywords, search engines may instruct their robots to ignore titles.  In that case, any keywords in your title would be wasted, and you’d want them replaced with something better.

Search engines also often rank pages that have new content higher.  If you don’t ever update your website, it may be dropped off the top ten list by sites that constantly have new content.  Having an SEO firm rewrite your text every so often can keep your page looking fresh even if it doesn’t actually have new information on it.

You should also realise that SEO is more or less another form of marketing.  Sometimes, a new marketing campaign or type of promotion fails, and it’s completely possible for your SEO to not bring in the type of customer you thought it would.  This is by no means anyone’s fault—no one can always predict how people will react.  Other websites can also simply out SEO your site.  You might find that you need to adjust your keywords a bit in order to get ranked higher than other sites.  Sometimes replacing a word like “equipment” with something like “machinery” can dramatically change where your site is listed in the search results.
